I am an experienced pharmacy technician with years of experience in working across Pharmaceutical Production, Clinical Trials and Quality Assurance functions NHS and private sector. Why have you chosen to register with The Locum Agency? *

I am chosen to register with TLA for future locum opportunities.

Tell me about a recent occasion when you were under pressure and handled it successfully. - What was the situation? - What actions did you take? - What was the outcome?

The staff member responsible for ordering media plates and bags had left, and the job was transferred to a new member of staff. A month later, I received a complaint from a production team leader saying that 100ml broth bags used daily to validate the session and products produced were due to run out in 5 days and no additional stock was available.
I carried out an investigation and contacted the supplier. The supplier mentioned that the next order delivery was due in 2 weeks. All media plates and bags go through a meticulous process of validation, and the supplier's lead time is 4 weeks.
I decided to look back into old emails exchanged between the supplier and the staff members who had left. I identified the same situation that happened around a year ago, and the supplier was able to deliver stock with a short expiry. I called our supplier again and asked if they had spare short-expiry 100ml broth bags in stock and the supplier staff said that she would check and get back to me shortly.
Later, I received a call from our supplier saying that two boxes of 100ml broth bags were available and were due to expire in 18 days.
I negociated one box of the product with 50% descont (due to short expiry) and next-day delivery.
My action avoid the production of desferrioxanima to stop, and consequently, there will be no patient harm or revenue loss to the department.

What is your understanding of the Medicines Act 1968?

An Act to make new provision with respect to medicinal products and related matters, and for purposes connected therewith. Presciption only medicines are the most restricted. They can only be sold or supplied by a pharmacist if supplied by a doctor. Pharmacy medicines can be sold without a prescription but only by a pharmacist. General Sales List medicines can be sold by any shop, not just a pharmacy.

You are asked to prescribe medication which is not clearly documented within the patients notes and medical record. What should you do?

I am a pharmacy technician, and pharmacy technicians do not prescribe medication. Also, my area is technicial services (aseptics), and clinical decisions are made by the consultant and pharmacists.

What steps would you take, going forward if you become aware of an incident or complaint, which you were involved or implicated in?

Any incident or complaint investigation should follw the department procedures and Trust policies.
Listening the facts carefully.
Ask questions about the incident/complaint.
What the complainant want to achieve.
If appropriate, manage expectations od the complaintant and explain what is possible.
Explain how long the process is likely to take.
Agree how to keep the complainant updated and involved, and how often.
Explain what will happen next.

Please outline your understanding of Clinical Governance.

Clinical governance is the system through which NHS organisations are accountable for continuously improving the quality of their services and safeguarding high standards of care by creating an environment in which clinical excellence will flourish.

Thinking about a recent difficult situation you’ve had with patient’s relatives – How did you handle this and the outcome
